My Favorite Things About Being a Wedding Florist

Wedding and Event Florals

April 5, 2025

People often think being a wedding florist is all about pretty flowers—and yes, I absolutely love that part. But what I love most about this work goes deeper than blooms and color palettes. At its heart, floral design is about emotion, connection, presence, and storytelling. These are a few of my favorite things.

Weddings are full of meaning, both loud and quiet, and being trusted to show up for people on one of the most important days of their lives? That never stops feeling special. Over time, I’ve realized it’s not one big thing that makes this work so fulfilling—it’s a hundred small ones.

Here are a few of my favorites.

1. Being Part of a Once-in-a-Lifetime Day

Weddings are emotional, tender, joyful, and sometimes beautifully chaotic. They bring together families, stories, and generations. To be invited into that space—even just for a day—is a gift I never take for granted among my favorite tasks.

There’s a moment that happens at every wedding I flower. I look around and see someone—usually the couple, sometimes a parent—pause and take it all in. The lighting is soft, the room is full of warmth, and they’re seeing it for the first time. That moment of stillness, of “this is really happening”—I get to help shape that feeling through flowers.

I’m not just delivering arrangements. I’m helping create the emotional backdrop for one of the most meaningful days in someone’s life. That’s a huge honor, truly one of my favorite things about this job.

2. Designing With Feeling, Not Just Aesthetics

As a former therapist, I’ve always been someone who notices nuance—what people say and what they don’t, the stories behind their preferences, the emotions they want to evoke. That lens comes with me into floral design.

When I work with couples, I’m not just asking about color palettes and inspiration photos. I’m listening for tone. For energy. For how they want their wedding to feel. Maybe it’s romantic and ethereal. Maybe it’s grounded, nostalgic, or wild in the best way. Whatever the feeling is, my job is to translate it into blooms, textures, and movement. These are precisely my favorite things to bring to life.

I believe wedding flowers should reflect who you are—not just what’s trending.

3. The Creative Freedom

No two weddings are ever the same, and that keeps me deeply inspired.

I love the creative problem-solving that comes with designing each event—working within a space, understanding the light, the movement of people, the energy of the day. There’s so much beauty in playing with structure, softness, balance, and shape. It’s often the little things that make the biggest impact: a single unexpected flower that transforms the arrangement, or a subtle shift in texture that completely changes the mood.

Floral design is both art and instinct. It’s planning and intuition. It’s knowing the rules and knowing when to break them. That blend of structure and creativity keeps me grounded and challenged in the best ways. My favorite things about this process are the limitless possibilities.

4. The Flowers Themselves

Let’s be honest—flowers are just magic. No matter how many times I’ve worked with a particular bloom, it always finds a new way to surprise me.

There’s the way a garden rose slowly opens throughout the day, changing shape by the hour. The scent of fresh jasmine in the studio in the morning. The color of a Moab rose when the light hits it just right. The tender petals of a sweet pea that feel like they could float.

Working with flowers keeps me connected to the seasons, to nature, and to something softer and slower than the pace of everyday life. It’s humbling to work with something that reminds you beauty doesn’t have to be permanent to be powerful, and this is one of my favorite things about it.

5. The Quiet, Meaningful Moments

There are moments in this work that no one sees—but they’re the ones that stay with me.

Like handing over a bridal bouquet and seeing a couple’s face soften. Adding a single flower in memory of a loved one. Helping a mother-in-law gently pin on a boutonnière. Walking into a quiet reception space before the guests arrive and taking in the stillness.

These are the things that don’t make it into the photos, but they’re the soul of it all. They remind me that this work is deeply human. It’s emotional and layered. It’s about showing up for people, quietly and beautifully. These quiet moments are some of my favorite things about this job.

This Work Is a Gift

Being a wedding florist is not just about designing something beautiful—it’s about creating something meaningful. It’s about holding space for emotion, honoring stories, and helping people feel grounded and seen on one of the most tender, joy-filled days of their lives.

Whether I’m flowering a full-scale wedding or handing someone a single stem from my bloom cart, I do it with heart. Always.

And that’s what makes this work so easy to love—a collection of my favorite things.
